Implementing technology category management while navigating organisational change, highlighting structured transformation and stakeholder alignment.

Amid changing ownership and processes of divestitures, a major pharmaceutical manufacturer needs to rethink its Procurement strategy for the technology category. Its leaders need to cut costs, reshape contracts and drive value-focused operations. So, they’ve turned to Barkers to lead this transformation.

A global pharmaceutical contract development and manufacturing organisation (a pharma CDMO), which has grown through multiple acquisitions over the past decade, was acquired in December 2024. As part of the overalltransaction, three of its manufacturing sites were also acquired. As a result, the company’s technology requirements underpinning supplier contracts, need to be “right sized”.

While forecasts predict future growth, the organisation needs to focus on recovering stranded costs and optimising technology spend in light of the right-sized scope and requirements. In practice, this means transforming the ways in which technology procurement works to align with procurement best practices.

With cost being a major driver, the pharma CDMO needed to optimise how it approached its technology spend and the management of its technology Procurement categories, in light of the goal to maximise value. To achieve this, support was required in two key areas.

First, the technology category wanted to introduce best practice category management processes and ways of working. This would allow for better control of the category and a more strategic outlook and working relationship with the wider technology stakeholder community. Then, the business needed to implement strategies and execute negotiations to manage costs and maximise contract values, in light of the divestiture. Where these two requirements meet – i.e. where the divestiture materially impacts large IT contracts – is where the pharma CDMO required focused strategic guidance.

So, Barkers was contracted to deliver a broader strategy across technology and Procurement, to help the categories achieve the biggest returns on technology spend, during this transition. This meant staffing consultants with the credibility and experience to meet the task. Then, the team set out to reshape how the categories work together.

Barkers’ approach was to keep the more transactional work (such as managing renewals) in good working order, whilst building and executing more detailed strategies to address the larger more complex contracts and areas of spend. Now, Barkers is in the process of transforming the culture of how the department and organisation operate. This involves renegotiating and consolidating large agreements, moving some managed costs to preferred suppliers and constructively challenging demand and improving processes. This happens whilst also rolling out the broader strategy. And the focus is on the space where divestments impact big-ticket technology requirements and contracts (such as with Workday, Microsoft, Salesforce, SAP, etc.).

Barkers has invested heavily in building relationships with technology stakeholders, understanding their business objectives and building this intelligence into effective strategies, to make the most of their supplier agreements. Barkers’ goal is for the pharma CDMO to really benefit from its investments in technology, now that its use needs have shifted. As such, the Barkers team is focused on identifying opportunities, efficiencies, cost reductions, risk management approaches, and anything else that will support the categories’ success. The team wants to make the organisation as agile as possible in the way it operates, whilst overlaying experience and expertise to reach the right decisions and outcomes.

So, Barkers is providing its strong industry expertise and institutional knowledge of the business to really support the category with its evolving requirements and challenges. The benefit will not only be cost savings and value-add, but also substantial risk mitigation and future proofing of the pharma CDMO’s financial commitments.

As this major player in the pharmaceutical sector continues its divestment, Barkers is committed to providing ongoing support. And, as Barkers introduces processes, strategies and ways of working for cost management and risk mitigation, especially in contract negotiations, the team is already seeing valuable improvements. Barkers is very pleased to be partnered with this valued client during their evolution, and the team looks forward to driving continued cost efficiencies and value for them, both now and in the future.
